What is Delta Sleep Inducing Peptide (DSIP)?
Delta sleep inducing peptide (DSIP) is a peptide found in neurons, peripheral organs, and plasma. In addition to sleep, the peptide has been observed to affect electrophysiological activity, neurotransmitter levels in the brain, circadian and locomotor patterns, hormonal levels, psychological performance, and the activity of neuropharmacological drugs, including their withdrawal.
It is reported to increase the ‘pressure to sleep’ in human subjects together with its ability to induce delta wave sleep (deep sleep).
DSIP attenuates emotional and psychological responses to stress and also reduces the central amine responses to stress in animal models. Also, DSIP has been successfully used for the treatment of alcohol and opioid withdrawal.
Endogenous elevation of DSIP has been associated with the suppression of both slow wave sleep and rapid eye movement sleep – and interestingly, also with body temperature.
